Family Food & Shelter
23. A typical breakfast consists of:
Some tea, cheese, and homemade bread. Nadja drinks milk
(dried milk mixed with water). She hasn't had fresh milk
for 18 months. When it is available, Arina makes coffee
for breakfast.
24. A typical lunch consists of:
We don't eat lunch and just have bread and cheese in the
kitchen whenever we are hungry.
25. A typical dinner consists of:
Vegetable and noodle soup, a dish made of rice, canned meat
and potatoes cooked in the oven, a tomato and onion salad, and
some homemade bread. Dinner doesn't last long, only about 15
minutes.
26. Are you satisfied with your food?
The humanitarian aid seems like very little. Distribution is
irregular, controlled by the government and corrupted by the
very powerful Mafia. Still, almost every month we could
possibly get:
- 1 liter of oil
- 2 kilos of meat and fish in cans
- 1 salami
- 1 kilo of flour
- some pëtÄ, beans and compote
- 1 kilo of sugar
- 1 bar of soap for each person
The cook uses this as a base to prepare the meals. He has to
find a lot more to please 4 stomachs for one month. Nafja uses
her connections with her neighbor who knows some important
people at the Egyptian United Nations base. She gets some rice
and spaghetti. Lokman contributes the vegetables he grows on
the balcony. Arina goes to the market to find potatoes and
fruits. She buys them if they are not too expensive and when
they're fresh enough. Many times she comes back with
nothing. For example,1 kilo of potatoes could cost $10 (US). For
$7 (US) she gets a kilo of old apples. A kilo of meat is $32 (US).
Because the Bosnian dinar is not considered valuable, people
trade with German deutsch marks and US dollars, when they
possess some. Only bread is payable in dinars.
